Leadership Consultants: FAQ

Is being a Leadership Consultant a real job?

Absolutely! We are employees of Kappa Kappa Gamma. We clock our hours, get intensive training, and have salaries, benefits, and an amazing network of other employees to support us. 

In a nutshell, what do you do?

Leadership Consultants provide advice, support and resources to chapters and advisers, and they serve as a link to the organization as a whole. Leadership Consultants may be based to provide continuous support to a new or existing chapter in addition to meeting with chapters across the United States and Canada to provide guidance about leadership development, Membership Recruitment, organization, management, and so much more. 

What does the interview process look like?

The interview process is similar to other professional opportunities. After you submit your application, you will be notified if you have been invited to the first phase of interviews, which is a Zoom interview with Kappa Headquarters staff members. Following that, candidates selected to attend the final phase of interviews will complete group and individual interviews and activities with Fraternity representatives.  

How has the position been impacted by COVID-19?

The health and safety of our staff, members, and local communities are the top priority. During the pandemic, we have had to be flexible. In-person chapter visits shifted to virtual visits and we work remotely for the time being. We anticipate that there will be a mix of in-person and virtual visits for the 2021–22 academic year.   

Will Leadership Consultants travel in 2021–22?

We hope so! However, we cannot make any guarantees and anticipate that there will be a mix of in-person and virtual visits. Adaptability and flexibility are two important characteristics of Leadership Consultants, especially during a pandemic. 

Is this a one-year or two-year position?

Leadership Consultants have the opportunity to serve a second year if there is a need and a mutual agreement is made at the end of the first year. Second-year consultants help mentor new consultants and continue to grow in their professional development.  

What are the career benefits of being a Leadership Consultant? How will the experience benefit me later on in my career?

The career benefits are truly endless. They range from relationship management and working with a variety of different individuals to creative and analytical problem-solving skills. This experience heightens your decision-making capabilities, conflict resolution skills, facilitation, coaching and mentoring experience, communication and interpersonal skills, and gives you experience with crisis management. A mentor once told me, “You are getting more experience in your 10 months as a consultant than I got in the first 10 years of my career.” 

What does it mean to be a based Leadership Consultant?

With the ever-changing needs of the organization, including the establishment of new chapters, Leadership Consultants are tasked with recruiting, organizing, and managing our newest chapters or providing extended support to our existing chapters. These consultants are based at one school, provided with a place to live and a grocery budget, and will also make visits to other Kappa chapters. These Leadership Consultants have the opportunity to make amazing connections with members of that chapter and to see the chapter grow over the year. 

How do I get my parents on board? What did you tell your parents?

This job is an extraordinary opportunity to open doors. As a Leadership Consultant, you have the opportunity to learn professional and personal skills that will aid you in the rest of your career and life. Kappa has over 300,000 members and this gives you a chance to connect with that network.

Are you a Kappa?

Yes! All Leadership Consultants are members of Kappa Kappa Gamma. 

When did you graduate?

Most Leadership Consultants are recent graduates. Many are around 22 or 23 years old. This makes it easy for us to relate to the different facets of college life. However, you don’t have to be a recent graduate or even in school to apply! We welcome anyone who feels they can bring something to the chapters and relate to the individuals they interact with. 

Is Chapter Council experience required to apply to be a Leadership Consultant? Is it required to have been the chapter President?

There are no specific requirements regarding Chapter Council/Executive Board experience. While many Leadership Consultants have been actively involved in their chapters, your leadership experience is not required to be chapter-specific. We have individuals serve in this position who have held five leadership positions, some who have served in just one position, some who have worked purely with Panhellenic, and some who haven't held positions in these capacities but have developed leadership skills elsewhere.  

How do you fit everything in your suitcase?

This is one of our favorite and most common questions! Many of us choose to travel with packing cubes, which helps to keep things organized and easy to access. Many also separate warm-weather and cold-weather clothes and have their parents ship things throughout the year. Most of us travel with one large checked bag and one carry-on suitcase as well as a tote bag or backpack. If you are a Leadership Consultant who is based, you will have your own apartment or living space. This allows you to be able to store items there and switch out your clothes more easily.  

Where’s your home base?

If you are a Leadership Consultant who is based at a new or establishing chapter, the school that you work with will be your home base. You will be provided a living space there with a grocery budget and other necessities. Travel during 2021–22 may be impacted by the pandemic. If you are conducting virtual visits, you can make anywhere a home base (at your own cost) as long as you have a good internet connection! If you are traveling, your home base is your suitcase! However, when we have weekends off, we have the opportunity to take side trips or go home. 

Does Kappa cover travel costs?

Yes! Kappa covers the costs of chapter visits and scheduled time off (i.e., Thanksgiving, spring break, and winter break). However, when we’re on the road traveling and we have a weekend off and want to take a side trip, we are expected to pay our own way. 

Do you ever have time off?

Typically, if it’s not a Recruitment or Initiation visit, we have the weekend off. We also receive time off for Thanksgiving, winter break in December, and spring break. Each employee also has 15 days of paid time off (PTO) to use as vacation or sick days should they need them.
